Daughter ofKiev Mayor Reports $5.5Million Worth ofJewelry Stolen From Her Purse inParis[1 - The Moscow Times 2010]

PARIS The daughter ofKievs mayor told police that she was robbed of4million euros ($5.5million) worth ofjewelry as she traveled bycar from Charles de Gaulle airport tothe French capital, Paris police said Tuesday.

Aspokesman for her wealthy father, however, immediately denied the report, which could be embarrassing considering that his daughter heads acharity organization funded byhis own city government and many Ukrainians are struggling amid awidespread recession. AParis police official said Kristina Chernovetska reported that aman broke into her luxury car Monday as it stopped on ahighway north ofParis, then stole her purse. Chernovetska reported the incident toauthorities and said the purse contained valuable rings and earrings, the official said. The official was not authorized tobe named according topolice policy and gave no further description ofthe jewelry. But aspokesman for Kiev Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky denied that there was arobbery. This is somebodys bad joke. We completely deny these reports about arobbery. There was no robbery, spokeswoman Marta Hrymska said.

Chernovetsky was one ofthe first banking magnates inUkraine after the fall ofthe Soviet Union and sold his Pravex Bank for 493million euros toItalys lntesa Sanpaolo inJune 2008. His term as mayor since 2006has been marked bypersistent corruption scandals, and he has often boasted ofhis daughters charity work tobolster his scarred public image. This would be the first public flap involving Kristina.

French police said they contacted the Ukrainian Embassy about the incident, but the embassy would not comment on it Tuesday. Hrymska insisted that Chernovetska was inKiev on Tuesday, but her whereabouts remained unknown. Areceptionist at the luxury George V hotel just off the Champs-Elysees confirmed that aChristina Chernovetska was registered, but it was not clear whether that was the same person. At the George V, the least expensive room is 750euros ($1,025) anight. Luxury limousines lined up infront ofthe hotel for guests infurs and designer sunglasses, while diners inside lunched beneath crystal chandeliers. Among goods on sale at the George V are 100,000euro ($136,700) pearl necklaces.

Chernovetska, 30, has degrees inlaw and economics, and she heads the charity organization Luchshy Dom, or Best House, ahome for poor older people funded bythe city ofKiev. She has also previously worked on her fathers political campaigns. The report ofthe jewel theft led toapolitical backlash Tuesday, as Volodymyr Bondarenko ofthe Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, her group oflawmakers inthe parliament, poked fun at both daughter and father. Chernovetsky needs toimmediately call up his favorite grandmas and grandpas so that they could sacrifice part oftheir pensions tobuy Kristina back her jewels, Bondarenko said inastatement.
