CAMERON SINKS FOR BIRTHDAY

Titanic director James Cameron spent his birthday underwater. Cameron, who turned 56on Monday, dived beneath the surface ofthe worlds deepest lake inasubmersible he used tofilm the wreck ofthe Titanic, the Foundation for the Preservation ofLake Baikal said.

Cameron boarded the Mir-1submersible and spent afew hours inLake Baikals waters, the Russian-based group said. The Mir-1, less than 8meters long, is one oftwo submersibles Cameron used tofilm the Titanic inpreparation for the 1997blockbuster.

Russia used the vessel in2007toplant aRussian flag on the sea floor near the North Pole. On Monday, it was piloted byAnatoly Sagalevich, director ofthe technical council ofthe preservation foundation, who invited Cameron on his first visit toLake Baikal and gave him ahardy hydronauts watch. The sickle-shaped lake inSiberia, some 5,000kilometers east ofMoscow, is the worlds oldest and deepest lake, according toUNESCO, which lists it as aWorld Heritage Site. It holds one-fifth ofthe worlds unfrozen fresh water. Ecologists say the 25million-year-old lake, which reaches adepth of1,637meters, harbors 1,500plant and animal species, including aunique freshwater seal. [1 - The Moscow Times 2010]

FSB Detains Romanian Spy

The Federal Security Service said aRomanian diplomat was caught spying Monday and given 48hours toleave the country.

Gabriel Grecu, first secretary inthe political department ofthe Romanian Embassy inMoscow, was detained while trying toobtain secret military information from aRussian citizen, the FSB said inastatement. Espionage equipment seized from the agent fully reveals his hostile activities against Russia, the statement said.

Russia has made aformal protest tothe Romanian government about Grecus activities and declared him persona non grata, the FSB said.

The Romanian Embassy inMoscow and Romanias Foreign Ministry inBucharest both declined tocomment on the matter. Relations between Russia and Romania are cool. Romania joined NATO in2004, and it has annoyed Russia bysupporting the pro-European government inMoldova, aformer Soviet republic where two-thirds ofthe population speaks Romanian. InJune, Moldova ordered Russia towithdraw 1,500troops who have been stationed inaseparatist region ofthe country since the Soviet Union collapsed nearly two decadesago. Interview with Robert DeNiro

In1976, Robert De Niro starred inthe movie The Last Tycoon. Now De Niro is atycoon himself, one so big that Crains New York Business has included him on its list ofNew Yorks 100most influential businesspeople. Ofcourse, this did not happen because De Niro is atwo-time Oscar winner and one ofthe highest-paid actors ofour time. And it didnt happen even because he is aco-owner ofthe famous restaurant chain Nobu. Inaddition torestaurants, De Niro also owns production company Tribeca Productions; Tribeca Enterprises, which conducts the Tribeca Film Festival; and alarge real-estate business.

De Niro, anative New Yorker, turned the former port area ofTribeca into one ofthe most fashionable (and expensive) places inNew York City. He got started bybuying up and overhauling local real estate. Like any businessperson, De Niro knows both victory and defeat. Vedomosti interviewed the world-famous actor and businessman, and he told ofthe ups and downs ofhis long career. [4 - The Moscow Times 2010]

Usoyan, who is thought tobe the most influential crime boss on former Soviet soil and is known as Grandpa Khasan, and his bodyguard Artur Bagramyan were shot byaKalashnikov assault rifle equipped with asilencer as they entered abuilding late Thursday, police said, according tonational news agencies. Usoyan had been staying inhis sons apartment inthe building, Lifenews.ru said. Inorder toprevent more attempts on Usoyans life, police intentionally reported Friday that both men were killed, while infact they were only hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Interfax reported. The location was selected because it was one ofthe few places where Usoyan could be ambushed, Interfax said, citing alaw enforcement source.

Usoyan lives inaMoscow region settlement closed tooutsiders, avoids public places, travels inarmored cars and employs former police officers as bodyguards, the source said. Police believe that the attacker lived inan apartment inaneighboring building and probably had accomplices who tracked Usoyans movements, the source said. The apartment cost 100,000rubles ($3,230) amonth and was rented byunidentified people inAugust, Lifenews.ru reported Sunday. The Interfax source said asearch for the attacker was ongoing but he was probably killed bythe people who ordered the hit. First, he failed his task and, second, he knows his employers, the source said. Usoyan said he did not know who might have ordered the attack, but police linked it tohis alleged criminal activity, Interfax said. Kommersant speculated that the attack might have been organized byarival, Tariel Oniani, who it said unsuccessfully competed with him for acontract todevelop the territory vacated bythe closed Cherkizovsky Market ineastern Moscow in2009. Luzhkov Says His Family Not Safe inMoscow

Former Mayor Yury Luzhkov said he has sent his daughters tostudy inBritain because he feels unsafe inRussia. Inan interview with Britains Sunday Telegraph, Luzhkov said he and his billionaire wife, Yelena Baturina, had very serious grounds toworry about their safety. There is hatred out there. And if that hatred is all-consuming and the aim is toget at the family then the weakest link is the children. We are afraid toleave them here inRussia, he was quoted as saying. Luzhkov added that he and Baturina decided tosend their daughters, Yelena, 18, and Olga, 16, toLondon for four tosix years, first tostudy English and then toenroll inan undisclosed university. He said the two girls had already left Moscow State University and were living inahouse that the family rents inWest London.

Moscow police said Monday that they were unaware ofany threats against Luzhkovs children. We ask Luzhkov totell us if any such facts exist. We are ready tostart arigorous investigation, police spokesman Viktor Biryukov told RIA-Novosti.

Luzhkovs comments followed media speculation that he was planning tomove abroad after President Dmitry Medvedev fired him on Sept. 28for loss ofconfidence. Luzhkov said that while the decision tosend his daughters abroad had been difficult, he had no plans toleave the country. Iam aMuscovite, Iwas born inMoscow, Iam apatriot ofmy country, and it will be difficult toget rid ofme. Why should Ileave? Especially since it could be agift for those inpower who hate me, he said.

Luzhkovs talk about threats probably reflected his wifes business interests, said Alexei Mukhin, director ofthe Center for Political Information. Luzhkov has now become useful for Baturina bybeing seen as ademocratic leader, he said. Baturina, who has been accused ofamassing abillion-dollar fortune byskimming the citys lucrative real estate deals while her husband was mayor for 18years, has vehemently denied media reports that she is selling her company, Inteko, or moving assets abroad. Luzhkov, however, accused businessmen close tothe Kremlin ofinitiating acampaign totake away the company. They have already been tomy wifes firm, he said, adding that Inteko was atasty delicacy. He did not name anybody. Inteko last week denied areport that Baturina and Luzhkov were negotiating with billionaire Senator Suleiman Kerimov tosell the firm. Kerimov is seen as close tothe government. [9 - The Moscow Times 2010]
