Government Promotes Special Support ofCrimeanWine

Russian government officials are asking retailers togive special support toCrimean wine producers inan attempt tohelp that sector ofthe peninsulas economy.

OnWednesday representatives ofthe biggest retail groups working inRussia andmajor Crimean wine producers had ameeting with Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov, also attended byofficials fromMoscow andSt. Petersburg. Theretailers were asked tohelp theCrimean wine industry byproviding special shelves fortheir wines andorganizing wine-tasting sessions instores.

We are not asking forspecial treatment, but we would like theretailers topay attention tothe complicated situation we are in, said Mikhail Shtyrlin, general director ofCrimean wine company Legendy Kruma, who attended themeeting with Vorobyov.

Last year Russia consumed 25million bottles ofthe peninsulas wine. Shtyrlin also said that Crimean vintners are trying tosolve their problems together andare planning tocreate aUnion ofCrimean wine producers. This may help theindustry inthe long term, he added. TheX5 retail group, owner ofchain stores Pyatyorochka andPerekryostok, said Thursday that thecompany has not decided yet whether togive special treatment toCrimean wine products. Retail chain Dixy said thefirm is open tonegotiations with Crimean wine makers andadded that thegovernment officials requests seem doable. Metro Cash andCarry also said it is ready todiscuss giving special attention forCrimean wine.

Billionaire Deripaska Rescues 10Stray Dogs From Sochi toU.S.

Acharity founded byRussian billionaire Oleg Deripaska has brought 10stray dogs tothe U.S. after they were rescued fromthe streets ofSochi.

Thesix female andfour male pooches landed inWashington, D.C., andposed forphotographers before being taken tothe Washington Animal Rescue League toawait their new homes. Thecharitys animal shelter inSochi, PovoDog has been rescuing stray dogs inthe city where hundreds ofanimals have reportedly been killed as thelocal authorities tried toclear thestreets ahead ofthe Winter Olympics. PovoDog said it has so far rescued more than 200dogs fromSochi andhas found new homes for50ofthem.

Many athletes decided totake home some ofthe animals. U.S. silver medal winner inslopestyle skiing, Gus Kenworthy, adopted three dogs Mama andpups Mishka andJake fromRussia. Hockey player Kelli Stack, whose team won thesilver, has adopted adog fromaSochi shelter andnamed her Shayba.

Deripaska, analuminum magnate andone ofthe richest man inRussia, has said that he opened up thePovoDog shelter after being reminded ofhis firstpet.

Soyuz Successfully Docks atISS

The Russian Soyuz spacecraft has successfully docked with theInternational Space Station, orISS.

Thethree-man Expedition 39reached theorbital outpost at3:53a.m., theFederal Space Agency reported, marking thebeginning ofasix-month stay inorbit. After running aseries ofroutine checks toensure that theconnection between thespacecraft andthe space station was airtight andwithout leaks, thecrew opened thehatch andjoined cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin andastronauts Rick Mastracchio andKoichi Wakata, who have been staying atthe station since November 2013.

TheExpedition 39crew, comprised ofcosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov andOleg Artemyev andastronaut Steven Swanson, was originally scheduled todock with thespace station onWednesday morning, theSoyuz navigation computer prevented thevessel fromexecuting acritical burn that would have kicked it up tothe 370kilometer orbit ofISS.

Russia toset up trading house for products made injail

Russias prison service said Friday that it is creating atrading house tosell wares made byinmates.

The Federal Penitentiary Service said inastatement that setting up the marketplace toplace orders and sell goods will create alink between government agencies and product manufacturers.

Officials did not disclose inwhat way revenue from the sale ofthe products is tobe used.

Sberbank, the countrys largest bank, will provide credit tofinance the venture, the penitentiary service said.

Oleg Korshunov, who heads the prison services economic and financial department, says penitentiary inmates produce over 100,000kinds ofgoods, ranging from uniforms and shoes tokitchenware and furniture.

Jail labor is used bygovernments around the world toprofit from the manpower ofincarcerated criminals, although the practice has ignited controversy inlight ofallegations that prisoners are forced towork unreasonably long hours for pitiful wages.

Inmates being forced towork 17-hour days sewing police uniforms for about 30rubles ($1) amonth.

The International Center for Prison Studies estimated that there were about 681,000prisoners inRussian jails in2013.

Over 130Moscow cops fired for drunk driving

Over 130police officers inMoscow were nabbed while driving drunk last year, officialssay.

In2013, 131employees ofthe Interior Ministry were found tobe intoxicated while driving, Moscows Interior Ministry chief Anatoly Yakunin was quoted byRIA Novosti as saying on Wednesday.

All ofthem have been fired and their immediate supervisors have been disciplined, Yakunin said.

The measures were part ofastringent new policy against violations within the police, introduced byInterior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev after he was appointed tohis post inspring 2012, the report said.

Fur coats worth $530,000stolen from Moscow store

Moscow police said on Thursday that they are looking for somebody who stole fur coats worth atotal of19million rubles ($530,000) from aclothing store. Police say the perpetrator entered the stores showroom on Wednesday night byremoving awindow on the first floor.

The store is located inaprestigious part ofdowntown Moscow, at 16Ulitsa Bolshaya Dmitrovka, according tothe police statement.

That robbery follows on the heels ofanother major haul from acentral Moscow apartment over the weekend, when thieves made away with $500,000worth ofluxury items, including achinchilla fur coat, jewelry and aRolex watch.

Sobyanin opens new metro line inMoscows south

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin officially opened the Butovskaya line ofthe subway system inthe capitals south on Thursday, connecting the Kaluzhsko-Rizhkskaya line (orange line) with the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya line (gray line).

The new sky blue line will give 270,000residents from Severnoe and Yuzhnoe Butovo more convenient access toMoscows rapid transit system.

Sobyanin said alarge transportation hub would be constructed near the Lesoparkovaya station so that people from the area could park their cars and use the metro.

Construction ofthe new line was completed injust 21/2years, as opposed tothe initial plan ofthree tofour years.

The mayor reminded construction workers not torelax because there is still much more work ahead.

We have dozens ofkilometers and dozens ofstations [tobuild] still ahead, Sobyanin said, adding: We have alarge amount ofserious work ahead ofus for the good ofMoscow and Muscovites.

Moscow plans tobuild around 50kilometers ofsubway lines bythe end of2016.

InJanuary, it was reported that the 8-year program ofMoscows subway construction would require 800billion rubles (over $30billion) ininvestment. One kilometer ofdeep underground tunnels costs around 7billion rubles, and one kilometer ofshallow tunneling runs at around 4.5billion rubles. Some 40,000people are employed at 150construction sites throughout the city.
